Hey there! I thought I’d take a moment today to reflect on the jobs I’ve had so far. It’s kind of fun to think about how each job has shaped me and given me different skills and experiences. Spoiler alert: I’ve been all about hospitality and service! So here’s my little journey:
I guess it all started back in university. I wanted to earn some extra cash and also experience working in a team, so I took a job at a small, cozy café near campus. That’s where I became a barista. At first, it was just a part-time job to pay for textbooks and weekend plans, but it quickly became one of the highlights of my college life.
Working at the café was an experience I’ll never forget. I still remember how nervous I was on my first day — I had no idea how to operate the espresso machine, and latte art seemed like actual wizardry! But my manager and my coworkers were so supportive, showing me how to steam milk properly and how to adjust the grind size for the perfect shot. Little by little, I got better. I learned how to make not just coffee, but conversations with customers too.
Being a barista taught me a lot about the art of hospitality. I realized how important those small moments of kindness are — remembering a regular customer’s order, sharing a smile, or recommending a new drink they might like. It was fun to see the same faces every morning and build that tiny community around the café. Some customers would tell me about their lives, and it always felt like we were sharing a little slice of time together over a cup of coffee.
I think what I loved most was the energy of it all. Mornings were always the busiest, with a line of half-asleep students and professors needing their caffeine fix. But there was something kind of magical about being part of their daily routine. Even if I was exhausted from my own classes and assignments, making coffee for someone and helping them start their day always felt like a tiny act of service that mattered.
Fast forward to now — I’m no longer pulling espresso shots, but I’m still in the world of hospitality. These days, I work as a ground staff member at an airport. It’s definitely a different kind of busy! Instead of brewing coffee, I’m helping passengers get to where they need to go, making sure flights run smoothly, and that everyone has what they need for their journey.
Working at the airport can be intense, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Every day is different: there are families heading off on vacation, business travelers in a hurry, nervous first-time flyers, and sometimes even celebrities passing through. My job is to make sure that no matter who they are, they feel taken care of and informed.
One of the biggest differences between working at a café and working at an airport is the scale of everything. In the café, I was dealing with maybe a hundred people in a day. At the airport, it’s thousands. But in both jobs, it’s all about those small moments of connection. Helping a family find the right gate, answering questions about flights, or just offering a reassuring smile when someone looks lost — it all adds up to creating a positive experience for people who might be stressed or tired from travel.
I’ve also learned to be even more organized and adaptable. In the café, it was about managing drink orders during a morning rush. At the airport, it’s coordinating with multiple departments, checking flight updates, and sometimes even dealing with last-minute changes. There’s always something happening, and I’ve really learned to think on my feet.
This year has been especially interesting for me. In addition to my usual ground staff duties, I’ve started taking on some projects aimed at improving the efficiency of our operations. It’s been a whole new challenge — stepping out of the day-to-day routine to look at the bigger picture. I’m working with different teams to find ways to make processes smoother, reduce delays, and improve the experience for both passengers and staff.
It’s a bit of a shift from my usual role, but I love it. It feels like I’m not just helping passengers in the moment — I’m helping to build a system that will make things better for everyone in the long run. It’s been a chance to apply everything I’ve learned over the years about hospitality, but in a more strategic way. Plus, it’s taught me so much about teamwork and communication on a whole new level.
Looking back, I realize that all of these jobs have something in common: they’re about people. Whether it’s making coffee for someone in the morning or helping them catch a flight, it’s about making their day a little easier and a little brighter. I’m really proud of the path I’ve taken so far. It hasn’t always been easy — there have definitely been some stressful days and long hours — but it’s always felt meaningful.
I don’t know exactly where I’ll go from here, but I’m excited to keep building on what I’ve learned. Maybe I’ll find new ways to combine my love of service with my interest in improving systems and processes. Or maybe I’ll discover a completely new way to help people that I haven’t even thought of yet. For now, I’m just grateful for all the experiences I’ve had — from the café to the airport and everything in between.
If I could give advice to anyone just starting out in their own work journey, it would be to embrace every opportunity to connect with people. Even the smallest jobs can teach you so much about kindness, patience, and problem-solving. And who knows? You might find that you love what you’re doing in ways you never expected.
So, that’s my little trip down memory lane. Thanks for coming along with me! Let me know what jobs you’ve had too — I’d love to hear your stories.
