Miyakojima: Eating My Way Through Paradise

If you visit sightseeing spots, you’ll definitely have soul foods in your destination. Miyakojima also has brilliant foods and most of them, you’ll not be able to have them in Tokyo area.

I asked a friend of mine where restaurant is the best. Additionally, I referred to a magazine and chose following 4 restaurants. Once you read this, you’ll also refer where you have to select.

1. San Irabujima

This place was a little slice of paradise on Irabu Island. Itโ€™s called San Irabujima-ten, and let me tell youโ€”this spot is the place to go if youโ€™re craving a seriously authentic bowl of Miyako soba. The moment we pulled up, I was already in love with the location. No big buildings or city noise, just this cozy restaurant surrounded by endless nature.

We sat out on the terrace, and honestly, I couldnโ€™t get over the view. Lush greenery everywhere, and a gentle breeze that felt like the island itself was giving us a warm hug. Itโ€™s the kind of spot that makes you want to slow down and really savor every bite. And those noodles? Wow. They were perfectly chewy, with that rich broth thatโ€™s somehow both light and comforting. You could taste the care they put into making itโ€”itโ€™s the kind of meal that hits the soul, not just the stomach.

I heard they do shabu-shabu dinners at night, and I can only imagine how amazing that would be under the stars. But honestly, just coming here for lunch was more than enough to make me feel like I was living my best island life.

San Irabujima-ten has this down-to-earth, no-fuss vibe that I totally loved. Itโ€™s not fancy or trendyโ€”just good, honest food in a setting that makes you forget about everything else. If youโ€™re headed to Miyako, make sure you carve out a little time to just sit here and soak it all in. Itโ€™s the kind of place that makes you feel instantly at home, even if itโ€™s your first time on the island.

2. Paina Terrace

Next up was Paina Terrace, and oh my goshโ€”what a treat! Iโ€™d been dying to try one of those famous Okinawan burgers, but as luck would have it, they only do them at lunch. No worries though, because everything else on the menu was so freaking good that I didnโ€™t even miss the burger in the end.

Paina Terrace is more of a restaurant vibe, not your typical island shack. Itโ€™s all about highlighting Miyakoโ€™s fresh produce and local meat, like their melt-in-your-mouth Agu pork. I couldnโ€™t stop raving about how fresh everything tastedโ€”like it had just been picked or caught that morning. And trust me, you can taste the difference.

The atmosphere was super chill, but still felt a little upscaleโ€”like the kind of place where youโ€™d want to linger over dinner with a good glass of wine. Which is exactly what we did! I ended up trying a couple of their signature cocktails, and they paired perfectly with the rich flavors of the dishes. Iโ€™m talking perfectly seared meat, bright and flavorful veggies that were so different from anything Iโ€™d had in the city.

It really felt like the best of both worldsโ€”Miyakoโ€™s laid-back island vibe, but with this unexpected, almost cosmopolitan flair to the food. By the end of the night, I was totally full and totally in love. If youโ€™re after a special dinner spot that still keeps things relaxed, you have to try Paina Terrace. Itโ€™s a little hidden gem that proves Miyako has some serious culinary chops beyond the usual island fare.

3. Nuis

Okay, so letโ€™s talk about nuisโ€”this one was a total surprise find, and honestly, itโ€™s the kind of cafรฉ you dream about stumbling on while road tripping through paradise. We stopped here on our way to Aragusuku Beach for some morning snorkeling, and it was exactly what we needed to kickstart the day.

nuis is surrounded by these open fields of grass, and the vibe was so peaceful. You could just tell this was a spot to take it slow. The inside is super cozy with this minimalist, rustic styleโ€”like the perfect blend of island charm and a modern cafรฉ.

I grabbed a seat by the window, and it felt like I was eating breakfast in the middle of a painting. The food was simple but absolutely deliciousโ€”homemade bread, local eggs, and a cup of coffee that honestly might be the best I had all trip.

What I loved most was how it felt like the kind of place where time just stops for a minute. Youโ€™re sitting there, surrounded by the gentle hum of nature, and suddenly thereโ€™s no rush to get to the beach or the next adventure. Just you, your plate of breakfast, and the soft morning light streaming in.

If youโ€™re heading out for a big day of swimming and exploring, stop at nuis first. Itโ€™s the perfect little oasis to fuel up and find your island zen before diving back into the sea.

4. Goya

img_7780-2-1

Last but definitely not leastโ€”our final night on the island had to be something special, and thatโ€™s where Goya came in. This place is everything youโ€™d want from an Okinawan izakaya: warm, welcoming, and just buzzing with that energy that makes you want to keep the night going forever.

The highlight? The live minyo (folk song) performance! Thereโ€™s something about hearing those traditional tunes live, right in the middle of the restaurant, that just hits different. Everyone in the place was clapping and dancing by the endโ€”it was the perfect way to close out our trip.

The food was classic Okinawan, with all the favoritesโ€”rafute (braised pork), goya champuru, fresh sashimi, and more. And of course, the drinks were flowing! We probably tried every Awamori cocktail they had on the menu, and by the time the band started playing, everyone was singing along.

Goya felt like the best kind of partyโ€”laid-back but lively, traditional but still so fun. It wasnโ€™t just a meal; it was a celebration of everything that makes Okinawa so special. If youโ€™re ever in Miyako and you want to end your trip on the highest note possible, this is the place to do it.

5. Conclusion

Totally, cafe, Okinawa style Izakaya, restaurant,,,

Everything are absolutely fantastic!!! Especially, Okinawa izakaya style gives you new experience. Can you imagine that all customers are standing up and dancing with Okinawa folk song?

Also, some Okinawa culture has been influenced by United states culture so most of cafes and restaurants are fashionable.

Please bring your family and friends and visit Miyakojima. Miyako Island has a lot of Marine activities, foods, and cultures. You’ll be able to make brilliant memories!
