Here is Ikebukuro. I’ve been there many times like twice a month since I was a high school student. I went to a cram school in Ikebukuro during high school student to pass an entrance exam of university. Also, you know I like watching anime so I always go to Ikebukuro to check the newest products at anime shops.
Ikebukuro is a bustling district located in the Toshima ward of Tokyo, Japan. It’s one of the city’s major commercial and entertainment hubs, renowned for its vibrant atmosphere, diverse shopping options, and lively nightlife.
I introduced Akihabara last month and Akihabara is also known as a Otaku world. Ikebukuro is also known as a Otaku world. However, what’s the difference between both cities. To sum up, Akihabara is a Male, Boy’s Otaku world. Ikebukuro is a Female, Girl’s Otaku world.
In this chapter, I’d like to introduce some attractions in Ikebukuro and to read this chapter, you’ll understand the difference between two Otaku worlds.

1.Shopping centre
Ikebukuro is home to several large department stores, including Seibu and Tobu, which offer a wide range of fashion, electronics, cosmetics, and other goods.
Here is an East exit of Ikebukuro station. Please have a look at a right side of picture. It’s SEIBU Department Store. There are many kinds of luxury clothes shops, cosmetics, and restaurant. The opposite side, there is a TOBU Department store. Contents are almost same.
When you take a walk about 5-10 minutes, you can go to a Sunshine City. I think here is a landmark of Ikebukuro. Sunshine City, a massive shopping and entertainment complex, is also a major attraction in the area, featuring a variety of shops, restaurants, an aquarium, an observation deck, and the Namjatown indoor theme park.
Compared to two department stores, here is more focused on street fashion, cosplay and amusement. There are many kinds of street fashion, vintage clothes stores, and cosplay like maid and school uniform for female customers. Also, there is a aquarium, and a museum including a temporary museum.
For Otakus who like to go shopping around, it’s better to visit Ikebukuro than Akihabara.
2.Restaurants and Concept Cafes
Ikebukuro is located beside Shinjyuku district, so people from mainly China, South and South east Asias are also living here. Or, they are opening their restaurant in Ikebukuro. Thus, you can enjoy to have a ethnic cuisine in Ikebukuro

I went to Tom Boy Cafe, which is an expert of India and South east asian cuisine, and ordered Thai’s combo for my lunch. It contains Gapao rice, salad, fresh spring roll and soup with iced coffee. It was a little bit spicy but, in order to have an authentic ethnic cuisine, Ikebukuro is nice.
Price:JPY1000-1500 for lunch
Not only ethnic cuisines but also concept cafes are so interesting. Ikebukuro is a significant center for subculture enthusiasts. The neighborhood is particularly popular among anime and manga fans, with several specialty shops, manga cafes, and cosplay stores catering to this community. Otome Road, often dubbed the “female Akihabara,” is known for its concentration of shops selling merchandise targeted at women, including anime, manga, and character goods.
Animate Cafe is one of a basic anime cafe. It’s collaborated to anime regularly. Not only Animate Cafe, but also there are many kinds of genre, BL(Boys Live) Cafe, Alice wonder lands’ cafe, male servant cafe and etc… That’s too many. If you’re interested in, please google and search “Ikebukuro anime cafe, concept cafe”.
3.Anime shops
Ikebukuro is also known as a Anime town but compared to Akihabara and as I explained before, a customer base tend to more female than male.
Here is the most famous anime shop in Japan, Animate. Actually, the Ikebukuro shop was renewed a few years ago so it’s the biggest anime shops in Japan I think. There are 9 floors in this building and it includes event space. Sometimes, a famous voice actor hold an event for introducing her anime. Also, the number of products is the biggest so if you wanna get a product which is your favorite anime, it’s the best way to visit Animate Ikebukuro shops.
In addition, there is a Pokemon Store in Sunshine city!!! How cute is this! Don’t miss to visit here when you visit Japan.
Also, there is one more anime shop. It’s a smaller shop than Animate but it’s my favorite.
My favorite Genshin and Starrail characters are welcoming to customers. Here is a Fantasy Village. They are selling Hoyoverse’s works products. Most of them are imported from China so all items are original and rare. When I visit Ikebukuro, I always visit there and check limited items!
4.My favorite place
Here is the last introduction of this chapter. My favorite place in Ikebukuro is here. It’s south Ikebukuro Park. To develop more clean city, Toshima district re-develop this park so it’s the cleanest place in Ikebukuro. There is a nice cafe and Starbucks beside this park. I buy foods and beverage, bring them to picnic and talk with friends. It’s my routine when I visit Ikebukuro with friends of mine.
